Step 1: Cabinet Construction Type

What type of cabinets do you have? This determines which hinges and mounting plates will work.

Understanding Cabinet Types

Face Frame Cabinets

Face frame cabinets have a wooden frame (typically 1.5 to 2 inches wide) attached to the front of the cabinet box. Hinges mount directly to this frame. This is the most common style in American kitchens.

  • Half-overlay doors are most common
  • Hinges mount to the face frame
  • Side-mount drawer slides are typical

Frameless (Euro) Cabinets

Frameless cabinets have no face frame - the cabinet sides form the front edge. This European-style construction maximizes interior space and uses concealed cup hinges that mount inside the cabinet.

  • Full overlay doors are standard
  • 35mm cup hinges are universal
  • Undermount slides are popular
